Knitting for South African Orphans

APPLES OF GOLD KNITTERS

For those who read the previous newsletter, you will remember the story of our visit from Bev Van Rensburg from South Africa. While here, Bev shared the need for the HIV orphans to have sweaters. She provided a very simple pattern, The Mother Teresa Bara Jumper.

Instructions follow for the pattern. Please join us in knitting and/or passing on the pattern to friends who knit so that we may send many sweaters to South Africa. We already have many lovely ones, but there are thousands in need.

You can collect your sweaters and send to Betty Huizenga, 1069 Bird Lane, Sanibel FL 33957. Let’s support our sisters in South Africa with a joyful and willing heart.

This sweater is very simple. Even the newest of knitters can easily knit these adorable patterns. We need many sizes, any mixture of yarns and colors is great; a wonderful way to use up all that extra yarn. Please be sure it is washable yarn. Thanks so much. Betty

Let's get behind this, call your knitting friends, and let's get knitting. As with the prayer shawl ministry, please attach a prayer or scripture to encourage the children. I am so excited about the possibilities for this project. With classes around the world, let's join hands and make a difference! And thank you in advance.

Send your jerseys to Lizzie-Ann's Wool Company, Inc, 54 East 8th Street, Holland MI 49423. http://holland.org/locations/256-lizzie-ann-s-wool-company The shop will hold the sweaters for shipping to South Africa. We appreciate the help so much. Let's be Jesus to these precious orphans.

Blessings, Betty

ABOUT BEV:
Bev started Apples of Gold South Africa after hearing Betty on Focus on the Family radio in 2000. She received a call from the Lord, not unlike mine, to start AOG South Africa. For nine years, we have partnered together, and now we meet face to face. I am so overjoyed. AOG South Africa had its own 501C3 incorporation, and classes have been started by Bev in many cities, establishing leadership and conferences similar to our own. (Only they get to go on Safari on Saturday) How cool is that?

Bev is married to Dr. Reuben van Rensburg, who is Principal of the South Africa Theological Seminary. She is the mother of Ryan, 31 who is a software trainer, deacon and runs a children’s ministry at the local church, Central Baptist Pretoria. Her son Darren, 29, is an Operation Mobilization missionary in Ecuador, and Kerry, 25, is a Speech Therapist, specializing in neuro-patients. She is a pastor’s wife.

She is currently working on her MTh Degree, researching the topic, “Deception in the Lives of Christians.”

Bev taught in secular education for 25 years; worked for Transworld Radio and Radio Pulpit about 7 years – mainly in worship programs, missionary interviews and, of late, Project Hannah awareness. She contributes to the writing of a prayer calendar called Gems of Scripture.

For the last 7 years, she has been the Student Counsellor for the South African Theological Seminary s well as the tutor for Children and Youth Ministry subjects and for “Christian Relationships”, which she calls a huge privilege.

Bev reports, “Apples of Gold has been operating for 9 years in South Africa and she has seen hundreds of women blessed, healed of hurts, encouraged in their Christian walk and discipling others in the Word. She has also seen God’s anointing on some lives to make these ladies mighty women of God!

Apples of Gold has started in Durban (KwaZulu Natal Province), Cape Town, Gauteng, Polokwane (Limpopo Province), Rustenburg (North West Province). Recently they have partnered with Trans World Radio/Project Hannah in ministry.

Her special joys are family-companionship, knitting, (love that) toy-making, making “Gems of Scripture booklets for one-on-one discipleship and training women in Apples of Gold mentors’ workshops, worship team involvement since a teenager, some organizing, singing and playg guitar and the Paraguayan harp.

Bev says, “Apples of Gold has God’s special favor on it – every year God has blessed us!”
